NOVA MENTOR 3 Light
The newbie is a lightweight design but fully suitable for everyday use. It is NOT an ultra-lightweight, fragile construction exclusively for X-Alps pilots.
Almost all significant constructive parameters are identical to the standard Mentor 3 – as are performance, handling and safety. However, it weighs considerably less. Depending on the wing size it is up to 30 % less. We achieved the weight reduction by developing completely new smart risers, lighter fabrics as well as cleverly slimmed internals. Of course, it is also much smaller volume to pack.
Since the Mamboo (ancestor of the Mentor-series) we build THE XC-wing in the EN B-category (or before that DHV / LTF 1–2). At the same time we don't push the category right up to the very limit. In comparison to other high-end EN B-wings, the Mentor 3 as the youngest offering has a rather low aspect ratio. It forgoes extensively long or stiff rods and the A-line attachment is not set back further than on a conventional 4-line design. Unsheathed lines are only used on the top gallery. In spite of these rather conventional features the Mentor 3 is considered to be the benchmark of XC-suitability. The package of real life performance (especially on speed bar), safety, handling, comfort and trust is just right. It now applies equally to the MENTOR 3 LIGHT
In addition to weight and pack size the biggest differences can be noticed on take- off and for collapses. The normal Mentor 3 is already uncomplicated to launch. Due to the lower weight of the canopy the light version inflates and rises even more willingly. As with practically all lightweight versions, collapses and especially re-opening after a disturbance occur smoother and less impulsive.
The new MENTOR 3 LIGHT largely matches the normal model but was slimmed so intelligently that the suitability for daily use does not suffer at all. Therefore we offer the full warranty.
The weight savings in detail:
· Risers: The new lightweight risers offer a high degree of comfort, but are not radical “Spaghetti-risers”, which twist easily and often unnoticed. We saved weight consequently but cleverly: double-layered webbing only where necessary, lightweight brake ring instead of a pulley, etc. In total, the pair weighs about 150 gram less than the standard risers.
· Fabric: Only the bottom sail and the unsuspended profile ribs are made from ultra-light cloth (27 g/m2 Porcher). Stressed parts consist of heavier fabrics.
· Inside: We “found” some more areas (in particular on the unsuspended profile-ribs) that can be perforated. Although plenty of crossports mean more cutter-time and more sewing than a standard construction, they help saving weight effectively.
· The diagonals and a few other details inside are slimmed, too.
The new MENTOR 3 LIGHT addresses XC pilots who also hike up to the launch site, alpinists who want to descend with a well performing wing or recreational pilots enjoying excellent performance combined with low weight.
